Chapter Six

Bob looked in the mirror as he changed into his swimsuit. The bruise on the right side of his chest was still deep purple and livid. However, around the edges it was finally starting to turn different shades of green and yellow, indicating that it was starting to slowly fade.

At the hospital at Kandahar Air Base, he was diagnosed and treated for the broken ribs. His doctor came in on the second day there and made a stunning offer.

“LT McCandless, it’s no secret that we really can’t do much with broken ribs except have you take it easy for a while. I talked to your commander, and since you were just about to get your two-week mid tour R&R anyway, I suggested that we send you home on convalescent leave for 30 days. He agreed.”

Bob had just looked him in stunned silence.

“Now of course, if you would rather stay here and enjoy our luxurious accommodations at the Kandahar Hilton, you’re welcome to stay.”

“No sir,” Bob had answered quickly. “30 days leave sounds like a plan to me.”

Two hours later, he was on a C-17 transport plane headed to Wiesbaden, Germany. A couple of more days of hopping from plane to plane, and he had ended up at D/FW International, where his dad picked him up.

Now, he was going to get into a swimming pool, when just a few days before he had been in a desert getting shot at.

And that Ilse girl…

“Holy shit!” He thought to himself. His dad actually trusted him with her. That was the part of the burden he hoped he was up to.

For months in Afghanistan, he just had to keep sex out of his mind. It’s not like of those burka-wearing women were available. Even if you did manage to get an Afghan woman into bed, it was a sure invitation for an ass-whipping at the least, and more likely an honor killing for both you and the woman.

His troops amused him with their conversations about sex. They referred to a deadly disease that all of them suffered from. They used the acronym DSB for it. It stood for Deadly Sperm Buildup. They also talked about a blindness condition that all of them claimed to be victims of. It was called “Whiteout.” This occurred when so much sperm built up in you, that it filled you to eye level.

Bob’s brief meeting with Ilse left him painfully aware that he suffered from a terrible case of Deadly Sperm Buildup, and was nearing a severe case of Whiteout. Of course, he would love it if Ilse could cure him of both conditions, but his dad had made it pretty clear the girl was off limits.

He just hoped he had the fortitude to withstand the temptation, because she was tempting indeed.

He left the guest room and went back out on the deck. The whole family was out by the pool now. His dad was grilling burgers, which meant that they would be the usual “Bill McCandless Specials,”
